Who Cares about Whom?

Like leisure suits and stirrup pants, some words should just go out of fashion. If I could choose one word to become immediately extinct, it would be the word whom. Here’s my rationale:

  1. Most people don’t know when to use who and when to use whom. It’s stressful.
  2. When someone isn’t sure which word to use, often s/he often chooses whom. The result is a pompous-sounding incorrect sentence.
  3. There are bigger grammatical fish to fry. I move that we transfer the resources & energy being used to worry about whom to the far more important problem of irregardless. (See previous post.)
  4. The word whom does not help the clarity of a sentence. Is one of the following sentences more clear than the other?
    • The man whom she’s dating is a convicted murderer.
    • The man who she’s dating is a convicted murderer.

Donne and Hemingway can keep the line For Whom the Bell Tolls,  but for the rest of us, let’s move forward. Please join me in my effort to eradicate whom.
