RecessThe American Academy of Pediatrics recently released a policy statement on the importance of unstructured play for the overall healthy development of children. The report was published in the January issue of Pediatrics: The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatricians.

The abstract of the report notes the importance of recess in the overall development of the child and discourages the growing trend of reallocating recess time for academic or punitive reasons. The abstract also states that “safe and well-supervised recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it.”

Since spring has sprung and the weather is finally getting a bit nicer, take the time to take your children out for some well-supervised time on the playground. It can provide benefits for you as well as your children!
