Holy Bagumba! Book Love….Unsolicited Book Review

Is it possible to fall in love with a book within the first seven pages?  This weekend, I picked up Kate DiCamillo’s Flora & Ulysses The Illuminated Adventures illustrated by K.G. Campbell.

How do you know you have a winner?  For me, the following works:

1.  You think you love the book by page 7

2.  You go back and reread pages 1-7 to yourself and then read it outloud to yourself  or anyone present–my dogs and cat did look mildly intrigued as they listened to me read

3 You don’t even notice when you have switched from text to illustration as the narrative is carried seamlessly across both.

4. You find your self reading very slowly so as not to make it end too soon–note:  I am of the sort who cannot savor candy on my tongue, I am a cruncher so it is a big deal to force myself to savor and not race ahead or ‘crunch’ up a good read.

5.  You can’t wait to tell others about this book.  The vocabulary will knock your socks off and has great teachable moments AFTER it is first read for sheer enjoyment with lots of pauses for laughter and incredulity.

DiCamillo has done it again.  Run, do not walk to your library to check this one out!!
