Reggie’s Robots, a revolutionary program at Region 10, is transforming the educational experience for homebound students. Utilizing interactive videoconferencing capabilities, homebound students experience school through the mobility of their personal VGo robot.

This innovative solution was designed to provide homebound students with continued access to their classroom and social environment. Utilizing their Reggie’s Robot, remote students sustain teacher and peer relationships through active participation in lessons, discussions and group work.

Sara Jones, a 7th grader at Reagan Middle School in Grand Prairie ISD, received the Region Center’s first robot Friday, May 9th. Sara underwent a liver transplant earlier this year and won’t be released to attend classes until next school year. Her Reggie’s Robot will allow her to keep up with classwork and relationships while she heals.

From the safety of her home, Sara will be able to move her Robot around campus, interact with classmates and teachers, spend the lunch period with friends and enjoy extracurricular activities without endangering her health. Sara will operate her robot with an internet-connected computer equipped with audio capabilities and a webcam.

Region 10 has purchased five robots to launch this tremendous initiative. However, there are currently over 350 homebound students in the districts Region 10 serves. To assist in outfitting each of these students with their own robot, a computer and applicable services, Region 10 is investigating sponsorship opportunities. Options include purchasing advertising space on the robots and general donations.
